Luke Littler’s prize money loss approaches £500k following a wild year

Ah, Luke Littler—a name that now echoes through the hallowed halls of World Darts Championship glory! And guess what? He’s just pocketed a neat £500,000. Or at least he did for a hot second before the tax man, with a grin wider than Michael van Gerwen’s losing face, whisked away a similar amount in taxes. Because who needs to keep money anyway?

In a scene reminiscent of a high-stakes poker game, young Luke decisively wiped the floor with three-time world champion Van Gerwen at Alexandra Palace. The crowd erupted, probably screaming, “How many titles can this kid win!” because that’s what you do when a teenager turns dart-throwing into an Olympic sport, apparently.

But what should we expect next? As the darts prodigy prepares to defend his title and conquer other tournaments, it appears he might need to invest in a very good accountant. According to the investment experts at Saxo, he’s already shelled out close to £500,000 in taxes since his professional debut. That’s right, a minor tax bill that doesn’t even include his shiny new half-million from this year’s prestigious darting escapade!

The math is as deliciously ironic as you’d hope: around £452,722 in income tax is floating around in the ether, just waiting to be claimed by the taxman. This generous sum covers his winnings totaling £811,000 from 2024 and the relatively modest £202,500 he pocketed before the clock struck midnight on 2023—proof that sometimes it pays to be a teen dart maestro, or at least it does before taxes.

When asked if he dares to dream of matching Phil Taylor’s legendary record, Littler quipped to Sky Sports, “If I want it, I’m sure I’ll do it.” This from a kid who’s clearly up for the challenge of hurling sharp objects at a board while paying for the privilege—one has to admire his spirit! A true testament that even in sports, dreaming big while being financially savvy is the way to go!

After an exhausting marathon of darting and exhilaration, Luke plans to take a much-deserved break. “I can’t wait to go home, chill out, and obviously not block myself away from everyone.” Translation: he’ll be glued to his Xbox, catching up with his friends as his bank account does its best impression of a bottomless pit because tax season is unforgiving.

But fear not, dear darting aficionados! Once the dust settles (and the tax figures come to light), our champion will return to the oche to defend his Bahrain Masters title—a feat that will no doubt involve more dart-throwing and less cash retention. Following that, he’ll be back for the Masters to kick off 2025 with thrilling flair, reminding us all that while darts may bring glory, the tax man always comes calling!
