NYC Judge Frederic Block continues to serve at 90 years old

Judge Block: The Aging Sentinel of Justice

At a sprightly age of 90, Brooklyn’s federal judge Frederic Block is tackling cases that would make even the bravest among us reconsider our day jobs. As fate would have it, he’s currently orchestrating the courtroom drama of a lifetime against none other than Rafael Caro Quintero, a Mexican drug lord so infamous he could star in reality TV if someone could just keep him out of jail.

A Comedy Show on the Side

Judge Block confidently referred to this case as “probably the number one criminal case in the country,” which must be comforting for him, considering he’s presided over a buffet of high-profile legal battles over the past three decades. We’ve got everything from the Crown Heights riots to Gambino crime family shenanigans. Clearly, he’s making a case for longevity in a line of work where most hold a retirement party before hitting 60.

    Stand-Up or Stand-Back?

But here’s the zinger—amid death threats from unsavory characters like Anthony “Gaspipe” Casso, Judge Block decided to moonlight as a stand-up comic. At Gotham Comedy Club, he debuted under the not-so-subtle stage name “Judge Felix Schmeckler.” Nothing says “serious judge” like a robe and a punchline about senior citizen discounts.

    Arithmetic: The Punchline of Life

While seated with all the authority of a judge who owns the stage, he quipped that while “30 goes into 90 three times, 90 goes into 30 zero.” Funny how that math works out, isn’t it? He might have just cracked the code to solving world problems: math, humor, and maybe a little less seriousness in court.

Courtroom Shenanigans and Drug Lord Sagas

As for Quintero, he’s garnered a spot on the FBI’s Most Wanted list after getting out of prison faster than a kid on a sugar rush. The judge’s courtroom was rich with DEA agents as Block pondered the possibility of the death penalty for Quintero—a delightful dinner conversation if I may say so. You can be sure the next hearing on June 25 will make for some high-octane drama, maybe even with popcorn in tow.

A Night Owl with Jazz Hands

Post-courtroom excitement, our virtuous gatekeeper of law enjoys late-night escapades, entertaining guests at his downtown digs like a cross between a judge and a jazz pianist. Let’s face it—you’re never too old for a little razzle-dazzle, right? And let’s not overlook the fact that he is also an author. I mean, what can’t he do? Write a legal thriller, you think?

    Approaching 91 Like a Boss

As Judge Block prepares to celebrate his 91st birthday, he throws shade at President Biden, claiming he talks “better.” This should raise a few eyebrows. Clearly, in Block’s world, being older comes with wisdom and sharp comebacks; who needs to dust off the old age prejudices when you’ve got judicial charm?

Born in Brooklyn, raised on Upper West Side ambition, and molded by Ivy League education, he seems to handle challenges like a fine wine. And, while he’s feeling sprightly and rebellious behind the wheel of his Mini Cooper, let’s just hope he doesn’t pull any moves on the highway as audacious as Quintero’s career.
