In a series dripping with absurdity and delightfully ridiculous monster mayhem, crafted by the undoubtedly warped minds of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, selecting the most startling scenes feels akin to choosing a favorite child from a litter of mischievous kittens. But here I am, boldly declaring What We Do in the Shadows to be a pinnacle of horror sitcoms and one of the finest comedic offerings of the last decade—seriously, where was my Emmy? I’ve taken it upon myself to sift through the chaos and deliver to you the most unforgettable moments from this delightful mockumentary featuring a gaggle of squabbling vampires sharing a dilapidated Staten Island home.

And just like that, the fourth season has come to a close—leaving us bereft with the kind of sadness usually reserved for your favorite fast-food joint running out of fries. To cope with the agony of waiting for years (okay, simply months) for Season 5, I’ve curated a list of my favorite—and possibly the most bizarre—highlights from the realm of the eternally undead. Fair warning: spoilers ahead! If you’re still on your journey through the seasons, you might want to hit pause right here and remove all clamps before diving into this culinary nightmare.

Your own list of “WTF” moments might toss in some curveballs, which is perfectly acceptable; mine is purely subjective (and downright hilarious, in my estimation). I invite you to jump into the comments and share your own picks, so we can collectively embrace our inner zombie enthusiasts. If a follow-up list emerges, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

And now, without further drivel… “BAT!”

    Jackie Daytona, Regular Human Bartender

What We Do in the Shadows, FX, comedy, spoilers

Oh, this episode is a whole treasure trove of “WTF” moments, and it comes as no surprise that fans adore it. Here, we have Mark Hamill gracing us with his otherworldly presence, playing a vampire named “Jim,” who’s tangled in a rivalry thicker than the plot of a soap opera. The highlight? Laszlo, donning a human disguise as a bar owner, complete with a cowboy hat and a toothpick. Jim eventually sees through this charade, leading to a bizarre, heartfelt moment sparked by a singing fish. Yes, the show really goes there. Overall, an instant classic, and a great candidate for your next questionable t-shirt design.

    JenElf’s Rude Awakening

In yet another twist that leaves everyone raising their eyebrows, Nadja opts to transform the socially inept LARPing enthusiast Jenna into something more… supernatural. Once Jenna thinks she’s died and rises from her gurney among horrified EMTs, it becomes painfully evident that Nadja may have skipped a few crucial lessons about being undead—like, for instance, that sunlight is a less-than-ideal accessory.

    The Hustle Dynasty

Guillermo’s journey reaches unprecedented hilarity as he infiltrates the “Mosquito Collectors of the Tri-State Area,” a humorously incompetent band of wannabe vampire hunters. Their quest leads to a showdown with a disco-obsessed clan, “The Hustle Dynasty,” where Guillermo must guide these clueless folks out of danger while simultaneously wiping out several of the Dynasty members and performing a backflip that would make any gymnast weep with envy. Talk about a flex!

    “The Jeebus Man”

In a nod to existential crises, our vampire squad attends Nandor’s funeral for a relative who suffers an unfortunate heart attack. Plopped in a church amid an abundance of crosses, Nandor attempts to engage with his grief—being a vampire, of course, comes with its own set of complications. Fire ensues, and it turns out holy water and flames don’t make the best pairing. Whoopsie!

    Nadja’s Host-Hopping Ghost

As if the rules of vampire existence weren’t already convoluted, imagine being haunted by your own ghost! That’s the conundrum Nadja faces as her spirit plays musical chairs between different hosts, even landing in a formidable inflatable rat—that’s right, kids, only on this show! This ghostly hijinks continues and somehow becomes a recurring character without even bestowing a name. Talk about low self-esteem issues!

    Gizmo’s Slaying Spree

What We Do in the Shadows, FX, comedy, spoilers

By now, we’ve seen Guillermo flaunt his ancestral vampire-slaying powers, but nothing prepares you for his crowning glory at the Council’s theatrical gala, which turns out to be a total trap designed to eliminate Nandor and the others. A stunned Nandor tries to out him, only for Guillermo to steal the show and wipe out nearly all the attending vampires. Rise, slayer, rise!

    Nandor Tries Aerobicize

In a bid to reclaim his humanity—or as close to it as a vampire can get—Nandor tries to turn a new leaf by joining a Wellness Center for reformed bloodsuckers. This leads to surreal cringe moments that are diligently set to an upbeat ’90s tune. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t end well when they awkwardly introduce sunlight. Yikes!

    Colin Robinson, Reborn! (Sort Of)

What We Do in the Shadows, FX, comedy, spoilers

The resurrection of Colin Robinson brings forth a wave of relief, albeit he returns as the creepiest baby imaginable. This triggers an entire story arc through Season 4 where Colin undergoes a series of bizarre growth phases, showing us that parenting can be just as hilarious as it is surreal. Wait for it: Laszlo stepping up as a father figure leads to pure comedic chaos!

    The All-Star Vampire Tribunal

Remember that one episode that feels more like a celebrity cameo convention than a courtroom? Yep, the “Trial” episode showcases actors-turned-real vampires—including the likes of Tilda Swinton and Wesley Snipes—who clearly had a blast while embarrassing themselves just for our entertainment. Who knew trial by fire dancing would be one of their claims to fame?

    Shortest Vampire-Werewolf Duel EVER

What We Do in the Shadows, FX, comedy, spoilers

With a setup rivaling any tense action movie, our protagonist Nandor faces off against a werewolf in the duel of the ages, only to discover that a well-placed squeaky toy can end it all in a heartbeat. Surprise twist: Toby survives, but the pack departs in absolute disgrace. Lesson learned: rein it in, folks!

    Laszlo’s P**no Reel

The infamous “Orgy Episode” gets side-eye for its outrageous premise, made all the more interesting by Guillermo’s hilarious narration of blurred lines between blood and sex. And yet, the kicker is Laszlo’s reveal as a former adult film star whose clips range from compellingly awkward to just plain embarrassing. Yes, Nadja finds it all “boring.” Safe to say, the episode earns its badge of absurdity!

The Baron Becomes a Puke Rocket

As our crew dives deeper into the nightlife scene, only the Baron would react to human food with projectile vomiting of legendary proportions. It’s a typical Tuesday for him—one that doubles as an episode high point! And spoiler: it’s the last we see of half of him.

    Simon’s Crew (All of Them)

What We Do in the Shadows, FX, comedy, spoilers

Simon the Devious introduces his eclectic band of misfits—including a vampire with a penchant for the odd—at the Sassy Cat Club. The sheer absurdity of this crew makes you wonder how they all fit into a single episode. Remember folks, Elvis has left the building, but he’s probably hanging out with the Leather Skins!

Nadja & Laszlo – Behind the Music

Turns out, the royalties were well spent as Nadja and Laszlo reveal they penned several pop hits, surprising audiences who probably thought “Come On Eileen” was also a vampire’s anthem. Their haunting tunes still echo through the hallowed halls of one-hit-wonderdom, reminding you that fame can be both fantastic and frightfully fleeting.

    Colin’s “Promotion”

Colin’s mundane job becomes the ultimate backdrop for his comedic ascension to management, proceeding to bore the very life out of each coworker with such flair that he grows a full head of hair. But wait, as destiny would have it, attrition claims the workplace, and with that, he’s off to find fresh meat elsewhere. Talk about corporate cannibalism!

    Night Market Death Match

What We Do in the Shadows, FX, comedy, spoilers

In a legendary episode, Nandor showcases his culinary incompetence when he naively enters Guillermo into a death match, leading to an uproarious grudge battle. The collision of egos leads to chaos, proving once again that Nandor’s all-knowing demeanor often gets the gang into deep trouble. Spoiler alert: they emerge victorious, albeit with a few bruises and lessons learned along the way.
