What prompted Mzembi to leave his safe haven in South Africa and end up in a Zimbabwe prison? The clear reason is that his slush fund was depleted, leaving him financially strapped.

Walter Mzembi’s Return to Zimbabwe: A Risky Move

Why did former Zimbabwean minister Walter Mzembi leave his exile in South Africa only to find himself imprisoned in Zimbabwe? One plausible explanation is that Mzembi’s slush fund had run dry. While other G40 leaders like Grace Mugabe and Saviour Kasukuwere had built substantial assets from their corrupt practices, Mzembi’s resources were depleted after eight years of frugal living as an exile.

    The Cost of Pride

Mzembi likely refused to take low-paying jobs in South Africa, a fate many Zimbabweans have faced. His pride, stemming from his status as one of Robert Mugabe’s favored ministers, prevented him from working menial positions, such as a shop assistant or chauffeur. He was accustomed to a life of privilege and could not reconcile that with his current situation.

Challenges for Zimbabweans in South Africa

The mistreatment of Zimbabweans in South Africa is well-documented, with many facing harrowing experiences in hospitals and public spaces. Mzembi would have been fully aware of these issues, making his decision to return to Zimbabwe even more perplexing given the realities awaiting him.

    Failed Political Aspirations

It is plausible that Walter Mzembi saw Saviour Kasukuwere’s bid for the 2023 presidential elections as an opportunity for his own political resurrection. His disappointment would have been palpable when this hope evaporated, leaving him without financial support and a clear path forward.

    A Forced Return to Power

With no money and his political dreams dashed, Mzembi was left with little choice but to reconcile with the current Zimbabwean leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa. Having been too close to the Mugabe family, Mzembi became a G40 leader. Thus, following the coup in 2017, he found himself in a precarious position, ultimately leading to his exile.

    The Consequences of His Choices

Despite returning to Zimbabwe under the presumption that he could make peace, Mzembi was quickly jailed upon his arrival. This swift turn of events has compounded his financial woes with the harsh realities of imprisonment. Reports indicate that he is now suffering from health problems while in jail, a reminder of the severe conditions in Zimbabwean correctional facilities.

    The Future of Walter Mzembi

Will Emmerson Mnangagwa eventually release a now-broken Mzembi, or is there a more sinister fate awaiting him in prison? Only time will tell. What is evident is that Mzembi is experiencing the harsh consequences of Zanu PF’s tyrannical rule. This situation underscores the lessons for those who have participated in the systemic looting of Zimbabwe; their positions of power were never as secure as they believed.

    A Lesson in Justice

It took 37 years for Mzembi and other G40 leaders to face a reckoning. The wheels of justice are slow but they do turn. It seems increasingly clear that the Zanu PF dictatorship is heading toward inevitable collapse, and Mzembi’s fate serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked greed for power.
