The illustrious drummer of Motley Crue managed to send shockwaves through the internet just a day prior, with an early morning nude portrait that vividly showcased more than just his musical prowess. This audacious pic made its way onto Twitter, Facebook, and the notorious Instagram, only to be swiftly scrubbed off Facebook and Instagram for violating their ever-so-sensitive policies on explicit content. Naturally, Twitter, that lawless frontier, welcomed it with open arms.
Lee initially played coy, captioning the scandalous snap with an almost childlike, “Ooooopppsss.” How charming. One wonders if that’s what he says when he accidentally texts his mom a love letter instead of his partner.
Fast forward to late Thursday night, when a reimagined version of the photo appeared on Lee’s Instagram. It seems someone generously applied an art filter that attempted to make his anatomy look like a piñata, with his necklace and tattoos revamped into a kaleidoscope of colors. And here we are, past noon on Aug. 12, with Instagram still deciding to allow this colorful mosaic of male nudity to thrive. Truly, it’s a miracle in these bustling times.
The audience is divided, as expected. Some fans are positively celebrating this flamboyant return, with comments like “The return of the king,” and “PURE ART.” Others, perhaps slightly more pragmatic, have resorted to suggestions of a digital detox for the rock star. Comments range from “Tommy, put the phone down,” to the poetic “NURSE HE’S OFF HIS MEDS AGAIN.” Even Tommy’s wife, Brittany Furlan, hasn’t held back her thoughts, resorting to a succinct yet telling “HELP.”
However, it’s not just die-hard Crue fans raising eyebrows. CNN reported that the original nude image ignited a fiery debate over the double standards of social media moderation. Journalist Lola Méndez tweeted her annoyance, observing, “‘So Tommy Lee can post a picture of his penis on @instagram that’s still up three hours later but a picture of my curvy booty in a thong bikini gets taken down? Cool, cool.'” Clearly, a new social media metric has emerged: the ‘Tommy Lee Penile Index’.
