Living in a 45-sqft Room: A Minimalist Journey
For many, the idea of residing in a mere 45-square-foot space may seem unimaginable. However, for Dr. Amirah Alieya and her husband, it’s the perfect fit for their lifestyle. The couple has found a cozy living arrangement within Dr. Amirah’s clinic in Banting, Selangor, utilizing the clinic’s facilities for cooking and bathing.
“While our living space is undeniably small, it suffices for both of us. This lifestyle encourages intentionality regarding what we keep in our surroundings,” shared the 36-year-old doctor, who actively shares her frugal living experiences on TikTok.
Embracing Frugal Minimalism
Since 2017, Dr. Amirah and her spouse, Dr. Muhammad Aiman Salahuddin, 38, have fully embraced a philosophy they call “frugal minimalism.” This intentional lifestyle change has led them to declutter around 95% of their possessions, with all their belongings now fitting comfortably in a single car.
Earlier this year, they took a significant step by downsizing from their apartment to the clinic’s small room. Their shopping habits have also transformed; they frequently purchase second-hand items on platforms like Carousell, and they prioritize simple, accessible meals over branded goods.

The Freedom of Simplified Living
For Dr. Amirah, simplicity equates to freedom. “It’s liberating. With less to manage, there’s less to stress about. We gain the flexibility to relocate whenever we want,” she explained. Her wardrobe has been reduced to just seven clothing items and one pair of each shoe— a stark contrast to her previous life filled with extravagant fashion choices.
“Quality over quantity is our new mantra, and we take meticulous care of our belongings,” she noted. This shift has provided Dr. Amirah with the mental clarity to focus on her patients, thereby enhancing her professional life.

Mental Wellbeing and Financial Responsibility
The transition to a minimalist lifestyle was driven by Dr. Amirah’s quest for improved mental and emotional wellbeing. “In my 20s, I made countless financial blunders, purchasing unnecessary items to impress others,” she reflected.
This minimalist lifestyle has resulted in a serene state of mind, allowing her to provide better care to her patients without being overwhelmed by external pressures. She now has financial stability, which enables her to save for emergencies and make modest investments.
Looking to the Future
The couple plans to remain in their compact living space until they achieve financial independence. “When the time comes, we may opt for a larger place, but we will continue to prioritize what we truly need,” Dr. Amirah shared.
They are focused on increasing their savings, clearing debts, and eventually purchasing a piece of land to build a tiny house, embodying their minimalist and frugal philosophy.
