Gold Coast Mum Saves Big on Groceries

A Gold Coast mother has revealed how she managed to secure hundreds of dollars’ worth of groceries for just $50. As grocery prices continue to rise, many Australian families struggle to spend under $150 for a week’s worth of essentials.

    Value of Grocery Hampers

Rachel Green, a mum of two, recently purchased an “enormous” parcel brimming with food through the Queensland not-for-profit organization, Loaves and Fishes. This charity provides affordable hampers and operates a budget-friendly grocery store for those in need.

    Amazing Discounts and Bargains

“I’ve been blown away by how great the value is,” Green told Yahoo Finance. She highlighted the incredible deals available at the grocery store, which complement the hampers perfectly.

    A Fruitful Bounty

In her social media video showcasing the $50 hamper, Green opened two trollies filled with a variety of groceries. The assortment included fresh fruits and vegetables, bakery items like bagels and muffins, pantry staples such as canned goods and cereals, frozen meats and veggies, along with essentials like milk, bread, and toilet paper.

    Better Budgeting

Green mentioned, “This would easily last my family of four for over a week. If we need any additional items, the grocery store is well-stocked with great value.” With strict budgeting and careful financial planning, the family’s situation has begun to improve.

    Charity’s Growing Reach

According to Loaves and Fishes CEO Scott Bourke, the organization now distributes around 500 hampers weekly across its locations in Slacks Creek and Caboolture, with another site in Toowoomba. While there’s no means test for the hampers, they are specifically aimed at families facing financial challenges.

    Expanding Need for Assistance

Reflecting on the increase in demand, Bourke noted, “The need for our services is growing.” He emphasized a shift in the community demographic, stating that more working-class families are seeking help due to financial strain. The charity aims to provide grocery items at half the price of typical supermarkets, welcoming all community members.

    Ongoing Challenges of Food Insecurity

A recent Foodbank report revealed a troubling statistic: one in three Australian households faced food insecurity in the last year, affecting nearly 3.5 million homes. The difficulty was particularly pronounced among renters. Foodbank Australia CEO Kylea Tink stressed that food insecurity is not a “fringe issue” and urged government intervention to support affected families.
