Shopping for clothes often leads to an accumulation of additional items that tend to be discarded, including shoe boxes, tags, and packaging materials. While many consumers wish to save these items for future use, the harsh reality is that most end up in the trash.

Numerous factors contribute to this trend, as some research suggests that only about 2% of plastic packaging is reused. The persistence of single-use products, often favored for their cost-effectiveness, further exacerbates the issue of waste.

With growing awareness of environmental impact, consumers are increasingly seeking ways to minimize waste generated from their purchases—whether by reducing the volume of items they buy or discovering innovative ways to repurpose disposables.

    Creative Hacks for Plastic Hangers

One inventive solution has emerged from TikTok, where user Brianna Mitchell (@mriannabitchell) showcases a clever way to repurpose the plastic hangers often received with new garments from retailers like Walmart and Target. In a video that has amassed over 1.8 million views, she asks viewers if they typically throw these hangers away because they aren’t useful.

Mitchell encourages viewers not to discard these hangers without first removing the clips from the ends. She demonstrates that, although it can sometimes be challenging, the clips can indeed be pulled off, transforming the hangers into makeshift chip clips.

    Is This Hack Really Effective?

The practicality of this “frugal tip” is subjective. While chip clips can be purchased for under $2, the hack does emphasize the importance of repurposing items that would typically be thrown away. But the question remains: can you effectively detach the clips from these hangers?

The answer is a resounding yes! This technique has circulated on the internet for over a decade, with previous users, including a Redditor on r/LifeHacks, sharing similar insights. In the comments, others have offered suggestions for additional uses, such as using them as hangers or even employing rubber bands to secure chip bags.

    Consumer Insights and Additional Tips

Some users have expressed skepticism about the availability of these hangers, as many retailers typically ask for them back at checkout. However, several commenters have shared their experiences, asserting that customers can keep the hangers if requested, while others mention that many hangers are recycled anyway.

Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with viewers not only thanking Mitchell for her advice but also suggesting improvements to it. For instance, one user recommended smoothing rough edges with an old nail file, while another shared that they use the hangers to dry bath mats.

Mitchell revealed in a direct message that she has been using this method for a few years after discovering it when a hanger broke. This hack has since allowed her to save on purchasing chip clips entirely. According to her, the only requirement is that the pant hangers must have spring-loaded clips to work effectively.
