Ah, college life — where memorable encounters are just a roommate’s self-tanning incident away!
Phoebe Gates, the illustrious daughter of tech mogul Bill Gates and philanthropic wizard Melinda French Gates, has recently showcased a fine tapestry of college anecdotes. With her early graduation from Stanford University, where she snagged a Bachelor of Science in human biology in June 2024, it seems she was busy crafting lifelong memories before stepping into the professional realm.
In a recent episode of their podcast, aptly named The Burnouts, Gates vividly recalled an unforgettable night with her roommate, Sophia Kianni. “Do you remember when we first bonded because you were butt a– naked in front of the mirror?” Gates queried, clearly marked by the trauma. Because, what says friendship more than a startling display of nude self-admiration?
Gates narrates with humor, “One night, I’m deep in REM sleep — and let’s be honest, I value my beauty rest. Suddenly, I hear her unmistakable sing-song voice.” Ah, nothing like the sweet symphony of a roommate serenading herself amidst self-applied self-tanner to jolt you awake. Instead of a gentle morning reminder, she blinks awake to find her roommate “literally just butt a– naked in front of the mirror.” Sweet dreams, indeed!

Kianni, perhaps a tad too comfortable, defended her actions by explaining her preference for faking it with self-tanner rather than risking skin cancer under the sun. “I thought she was dead asleep,” she admitted, noting that her singing may have been a touch too loud for an optimal stealth operation.
Despite the mental scar Gates has humorously declared will “never ever go away,” she reminisces fondly about Kianni’s self-tanning endeavor. “That’s when I knew: the ice has officially broken, and I love this woman!” Because nothing solidifies a friendship like a scandalous awakening, right?
Kianni also expressed surprise at her newfound comfort around Gates, recognizing her usually reclusive nature. “This is crazy! I’m not usually this free,” she mused, taken aback by Gates’ warm vibe. And thus, from one naked encounter arose a bond forged in the fires of both embarrassment and self-tan.
But this escapade isn’t the only reason they clicked. Gates elaborated on how both ladies had endured less-than-pleasant high school romances alongside shared parental divorce angst. Ah, the college experience: where existential crises mesh with spontaneous self-tan applications.
