Transformative Power of Music and Community in Education
In a small Tanzanian village in Pwani, a vibrant dance party is drawing to a close. For the past two hours, locals have celebrated by singing and playing traditional ngombe drums. Now, as festivities wind down, Sheilla, the Communications and Partnership Lead for Media for Development and Advocacy (MEDEA), invites everyone to gather around a large projector screen for a film premiere.
This engaging method of storytelling marks the beginning of a dialogue around critical issues such as gender bias, early marriage, and the barriers preventing girls from accessing education in Tanzania. Supported by Malala Fund and funded by Pura, local organizations are finding innovative, culturally relevant ways to address these challenges.
Once the film concludes, Sheilla prompts the audience to reflect: “What did you think about the film? How can we relate it to our own experiences?” Such reflective conversations nurture community engagement, potentially sparking ripple effects of change throughout the village.
Across Tanzania, education is often interrupted by gender-based violence and systemic issues like poverty and discrimination, which severely affect adolescent girls’ school attendance. MEDEA addresses these barriers through film and radio programs, striving to affirm education as a fundamental right and cultivate allyship among community members in support of girls’ education.
Sheilla’s narrative is just one among many inspiring stories that led to the creation of Heart on Fire, a new fragrance in the Pura x Malala Fund Collection. This scent blends the warm, earthy spices of Tanzania with playful notes, using the power of fragrance to foster connection and inspire global action for educational equity.
A Collaborative Approach to Promoting Global Education
Pura, which values education as both a freedom and a human right, has partnered with Malala Fund since 2022. The collaboration focuses on addressing educational barriers in the most affected regions by investing in locally-led solutions. Such initiatives, like MEDEA, challenge discriminatory beliefs while working toward sustainable community transformation.
Global support amplifies the impact of local solutions. Pura harnesses the power of scent to link people worldwide with the girls and women in these communities. The Pura x Malala Fund Collection incorporates natural ingredients from Tanzania, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Brazil, places where Malala Fund is actively working to eliminate educational barriers. With eight percent of net revenue funneling to Malala Fund, the collection not only provides financial backing but also ignites a shared commitment to the global movement for girls’ education.
Naiara Leite: Reimagining Opportunities in Brazil
In Brazil, ten-year-old Julia faces educational challenges that differ from those in Tanzania. Racial discrimination often contributes to high dropout rates among Black, quilombola, and Indigenous girls. Naiara Leite, Executive Coordinator of Odara, emphasizes the societal stigma against Black education, stating, “In the logic of Brazilian society, Black people don’t need to study.” Odara, with support from Malala Fund, launched initiatives to combat these disparities and foster higher school completion rates among marginalized girls.
Mama Habiba: Redefining Education in Nigeria
Similarly, in Nigeria, Mama Habiba highlights the importance of education and safe spaces for girls. With one in three girls married before the age of 18, educational dropouts significantly impact their futures. The Centre for Girls’ Education, founded by Mama Habiba, creates environments where girls can safely learn and advocate for themselves. This initiative aligns with research showing that educated women contribute positively to their communities and economies.
Through initiatives that promote safety, quality, and accessibility in education, girls and local leaders are pushing against systemic barriers. From celebratory parades and film screenings to empowering workshops, these efforts remind us that education is not merely an opportunity—it is a fundamental right that fuels freedom and progress for everyone.
