On March 27, a dark cloud descended upon the box office, and no, it wasn’t just the angst from latest emo bands. Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi spectacle, Project Hail Mary, swept the box office floor with an impressive $14.7 million while Pixar’s Hoppers, featuring animated vegetables that probably have more personality than some humans, snagged second place with a mere $3.1 million. And then, there’s the latest nugget of cinematic joy—They Will Kill You. This imaginative slice of horror-comedy managed to pull in a staggering $2.3 million, earning it the respect of… well, not many.

Now, if this film, starring the talented Zazie Beetz, kicks it up a notch over the weekend, it might just manage to limp to about $6 million by the end of its opening weekend. Of course, that would still land it a cool 40% short of the early, wildly optimistic $10 million predictions. Meanwhile, internationally, it collected $1.4 million in all the places that apparently didn’t read the script.

They Will Kill You – Box Office Summary

    North America: $2.3 million
    International: $1.4 million
    Worldwide: $3.7 million

Looking at these numbers, one has to ask: can They Will Kill You gather enough steam to actually crawl toward the break-even point or will it remain forever trapped in the realm of “movie that could have been?” Grab your popcorn, because this journey is not going to be an easy ride.

They Will Kill You – Budget & Theatrical Break-Even (Estimated)

This delightful chaos known as They Will Kill You was birthed with a budget of approximately $20 million. To justify its existence and allow those happy investors to breathe again, it needs to rake in about $50 million worldwide. That’s right, folks—the 2.5x multiplier rule is real, and it’s not pretty.

Given its current worldwide earnings of $3.7 million, this cinematic masterpiece still requires approximately $46.3 million to avoid the dreaded “box office flop” title. Strong ticket sales through the next weekend, mixed with some divine intervention, might just be the ticket, although as it stands, this task is as easy as finding a vegetarian in a steakhouse. Yet the final box office verdict will unfurl its secrets in due time—stay tuned.

They Will Kill You – Plot & Cast

Directed by Kirill Sokolov, this delightful misadventure stars Asia Reeves (that’s right, Zazie Beetz again), an ex-convict who takes on the exciting job of a live-in housekeeper in a high-rise—what could possibly go wrong? Spoiler alert: it appears the building has some cobwebs in its closet, with folks mysteriously disappearing like snacks at a kid’s party. With an ensemble cast featuring Myha’la, Paterson Joseph, Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette, the film is an eclectic mix of woke horror and comedic chaos.
