In a moment that surely made history feel a bit weirder, Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado handed over her actual Nobel Peace Prize medal to Donald Trump on Thursday.
The engraved plaque read: “To President Donald J. Trump. In Gratitude for Your Extraordinary Leadership in Promoting Peace through Strength, Advancing Diplomacy, and Defending Liberty and Prosperity.”
We’re not quite sure what the punctuation means, but it definitely feels like it was dictated by a Twitter thread gone wrong.
And it appears Machado left with a delightful red bag overflowing with Trump swag in return.

Naturally, the internet erupted with jokes about this gloriously bizarre exchange. Here are some highlights from the comedic chaos:
1. The Takeaway: Receiving someone else’s accolade doesn’t magically confer the achievement.
2. Comparisons to awards we actually earn.
The crowd went wild over each absurdity being shared. We’re still waiting for confirmation on whether Machado also received a ‘Best Supporting Friend’ award from the Oscars…
