Bradbury Takes a Swing at Paul
In what can only be described as a delightful slice of sporting banter, Aussie Olympic legend Steven Bradbury couldn’t resist throwing a cheeky jab at celebrity boxer Jake Paul after the formidable Jutta Leerdam seized gold at the Milano Cortina Games. Leerdam, who outskated her own expectations, shattered records and tears, clinching Olympic glory, eclipsing her previous silver from the Winter Olympics four years ago. Gold? Check. National record? Double check.
As Leerdam sobbed like a contestant in a very emotional reality show, Paul was not far behind, shedding tears of his own in the stands, possibly from joy or admiration or perhaps from just realizing he had lost another bet. But let’s not digress into Paul’s financial woes.

Paul and Leerdam have managed to turn their romance into a professional cheerleading spectacle. She’s championing his questionable boxing career while he’s supporting her Olympic dreams. It’s practically a fairy tale—if you swap the castle for a boxing ring and the charming prince for a guy who once threw a giant party in a Japanese suicide forest.
But back to business—cameras were glued to this dynamic duo as Paul whooped and hollered, probably wondering why nobody was throwing money at him for that enthusiasm. Amidst the celebration, Bradbury couldn’t help but inject a dose of irony, quipping, “I reckon she’s a better skater than he is a boxer.” Touché, Steven. Touché.

The pair, who got engaged last year, have proven that support can travel both ways, even if one half of the duo is… less Olympic and more internet sensation. Leerdam now finds herself reveling in victory, having narrowly missed out on gold in Beijing. The pressure was on, and of course, the ice was slippery, but fear not—she had six world titles to her name before setting her sights on that Olympic gold.

Italy Sweeps In with Gold
Leerdam’s exceptional performance occurred on a day filled with history for the host nation. Italy managed to haul six medals in one day, a feat more remarkable than finishing a whole pizza without taking a breath. This marks a record-breaking medal haul for Italy, a country that has traditionally played it cool in the medal count game since the dawn of the Winter Games in 1924.
After just two days of competition, Italy proudly flaunted nine medals, with speed-skater Francesca Lollobrigida charming the crowd by celebrating her 35th birthday with a gold medal in the 3000 meters. What a party! Italy’s first win in women’s speed-skating at any Winter Games felt like the cherry on a very fresh gelato.
This puts the Azzurri almost halfway to their all-time best tally from the Winter Games, which rests at 20 medals from Lillehammer in 1994. They previously snagged 11 medals during their last home Games in Turin in 2006 and a respectable 17 in Beijing just four years ago. Italian Olympic Committee president Luciano Buonfiglio had previously declared an ambitious goal of at least 19 medals, and it seems they’re not just aiming—they’re hitting the bullseye.
