Hilarious ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Blunders That Made Even the Host Crack Up

Ah, “Wheel of Fortune”—where the only thing spinning faster than the wheel is the potential for hilarity. From Pat Sajak’s accidental spoilers to contestants creating delightful chaos, these clips are what comic dreams are made of.

“Wheel of Fortune” has gracefully pirouetted through decades of American television, offering not just tantalizing puzzles and dreamy prizes, but also a buffet of laughter that leaves viewers reeling. Iconic moments often unfold when contestants mispronounce words, make jaw-droppingly incorrect guesses, or plunge headlong into awkwardness, and voilà—instant comedy! Perhaps it’s nerves or a delicious brain freeze, but one thing’s certain: as long as that wheel spins, expect a delightful side of giggle. So, grab some popcorn as we take a dive into the most uproarious moments on “Wheel of Fortune.”

    1. Right in the Butt

Probably the funniest moment in Wheel Of Fortune history just happened today. Still laughing. Right in the butt! 😂😅🤣 pic.twitter.com/Q479S9H1ug

    — David (@DHajostek) May 24, 2024

Contestant Tavaris Williams aimed for glory by attempting to solve a phrase puzzle, confidently declaring “Right in the butt!” with only a few letters on the board. Cue laughter from the audience and a collective gasp from fellow contestants—because the actual answer was “This is the best!” Surprise twist: the internet turned it into meme magic. Jimmy Kimmel even invited Williams to his show, asking if that phrase ever came up in his daily life. To which Williams replied, “I have never used those words in sequential order a day in my life, Jimmy.” Still, he took home a nifty $9,500 and a forever spot in “Wheel of Fortune” blooper history.

    2. A Round of Sausage

Ah, the “sausage incident,” where contestant Will Jordan faced off against the puzzle “___E _OURSE_F A ROUN_ OF A___AUSE” and boldly declared it to be “Treat yourself a round of sausage.” Yes, this is what we call going for the gold and landing straight in a curb. Host Ryan Seacrest quipped, “Will, I kind of like yours better.” Jordan later mused about his moment of brilliance (or lack thereof), claiming he totally blanked. If Ryan’s watching from his couch with a beer, I say: mission accomplished!

    3. Mispronouncing Achilles

Back in 2014, student Julian Batts faced a pivotal moment where mispronouncing “Achilles” as “a-chill-us” led him to miss out on a cool million bucks. As the suspense thickened, the studio went quiet. Pat Sajak, ever the supportive host, tried to wipe it “clean from our memory bank.” Spoiler alert: Batts didn’t go home empty-handed; he still snagged the episode win. Thank goodness we have YouTube to immortalize the moment!

    4. Flamenco vs. Flamingo

Ah yes, pronunciation matters—especially when Jonny Knowles confidently shouted “flamingo dance lessons” instead of “FLAMENCO DANCE LESSONS.” At this rate, he seemed more suited for a nature documentary than a game show. Sajak, in his dry wit, had to intervene: “You gave us a ‘G’ instead of a ‘C.” Knowles appeared genuinely puzzled, which only made it funnier. He later expressed his shock and confusion on Good Morning America, further proving that game show anxiety is real.

    5. Fresh Tropical Fruit

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a single audience member audibly have such a violent reaction on Wheel of Fortune, as this lady did when a poor contestant called a G in “Fresh.” pic.twitter.com/FiFWTNlphM

    — Chad Mosher (@ChadMosher) February 21, 2023

In a Teen Week facepalm moment, contest Khushi was just one letter away from banking $650 and a trip to Antigua with “FRE_H TROPICAL FRUIT.” Alas, she triumphantly said a “G,” creating a unique answer: “Fregh tropical fruit.” This left the audience grumbling and Sajak attempting to comfort her, saying, “Sometimes it’s a word that just doesn’t want to come into focus.” No kidding, Pat. Anxiety level: expert mode.

    6. Quite Frankly

The twist of fate this time belonged to Pat Sajak himself, who inadvertently gave away the answer to a phrase during casual banter in the bonus round. Awkward! He said, “Yikes, well I’d rather be standing here than there, quite frankly,” and almost immediately questioned, “Did you hear what you just said?” Honestly, Pat, we didn’t hear it; we were too busy laughing. Just goes to show that some people watch for the puzzles, while others watch for the slip-ups.

    7. Self Potato

In another example of comedic genius, fifth-grade teacher Lolita McAuley brought us the gifting of “SELF-POTATO” instead of the far more dignified “self-portrait.” In a post-show confessional, she expressed how her mind “went completely blank.” Ironically, that slip-up will likely be a teaching moment to show her students that even their teacher can serve up a side of cringe with a sprinkle of laughter.

    8. I Have the Wine

Then there’s Natasha Holly, who reminded us not all contestants can differentiate between classic country music and wine preferences. Faced with “I _A__ THE _INE BY J_HNNY _A_H,” she boldly answered “I Have the Wine by Johnny Cash,” losing a juicy $9,800. The audience gasped, desperately trying not to laugh. Oh, Natasha, perhaps a vineyard tour would be in order?

    9. The Pointed Desert

In possibly the most surreal instance of groupthink, contestants Lindsey and James both fell into the trap of answering “The Pointed Desert” for the puzzle “THE P __NTED DESERT.” It was like watching a comedy sketch unfold in real time. Sajak, trying to remain professional, finally quipped, “It’s not ‘The Pointed Desert,’ no matter how many times you say it.” A collective ‘facepalm’ echoed in the studio as Kelly finally solved it. Sweet relief!

    10. Where Is Venice?

Lastly, test your geography skills with the contestant who mistook Venice for Paris—the audacity! This led to heart-stopping moments as Sajak asked, “Where is Venice?” and he blurted “Paris!” before trying to backtrack. However, his wife Keri was practically fainting in the background, whispering, “Do we still get the trip?” Spoiler: they still got to go to Italy, which is good, because I’d hate to see how a mistake that big would play out in a foreign country.
