The Delightful Dilemma of Secret Cash

In his book “Rinsed: From Cartels to Crypto: How the Tech Industry Washes Money for the World’s Deadliest Crooks” (Penguin Business), author Geoff White poses a burning question: what would you do if you suddenly came into a fortune you couldn’t exactly share at dinner parties? “You’re faced with an excruciating dilemma,” he quips, “How do you enjoy your bountiful cash while shoveling dirt on its dubious origins?” Spoiler alert: money laundering is the answer, and it’s more popular than avocado toast on a Sunday brunch menu.

    The Technology Tango

White unveils the not-so-shocking revelation that technology and money laundering have a symbiotic relationship that would make even the most romantic of couples envious. “Techies have a conspicuous habit of creating innovations that inadvertently have the precise characteristics money launderers love,” writes White, as if suggesting that the latest app for ordering pizza might also double as a money-washing machine. Can you imagine? “Hi, yes, I’d like one extra-large pepperoni and a side of clean cash, please.”

The Three Stages of Laundering—Takin’ It to the Next Level

According to White, money-laundering is a well-organized three-course meal, starting with the ‘placement’ of dirty money into financial systems, moving on to ‘layering,’ where it gets beautifully mixed with legitimate funds (like a cocktail of confusion), and wrapping up with something he calls ‘new availability’. It’s like a magic show, but instead of pulling a rabbit out of a hat, you pull a pile of clean cash from a messy crime scene. Abracadabra!

    Changing the History—A Real Page-Turner

“To launder money is to change its history,” White explains with all the flair of a historical novelist. Imagine if you could just erase any regrettable chapters in your life. “Oh, that binge-drinking phase? Never happened! I was always a perfectly rational adult.” If only! But alas, unless you have a knack for financial wizardry, you might need to stick to more conventional methods, like a good old-fashioned therapist.

    Cybercrime—The New Playground

Gearing up for the digital era, “Rinsed” dives into the ever-intriguing realm of cybercrime—because who doesn’t like a little tech-savvy villainy? From Nigeria’s ‘Yahoo Boys’ (seriously, it’s not just a search engine anymore) to Hydra, the dark web’s answer to eBay, the shift to online crime makes your grandmother’s bingo nights look positively quaint. Honestly, moving money has never been easier or more stylish!

Autonomous Mixing Machines—The Future of Crime, Or Just Lazy Tech?

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any weirder, along comes the $625 million crypto-heist from Singaporean gaming outfit, Sky Mavis. “What made that sinister,” White notes, “was that the tech to launder the crypto was like a driverless car: an autonomous mixer with no controlling owner.” Yes, the perfect technocratic crime, brought to you by the same people who can’t figure out how to park their Teslas. Oh, the irony!

    Future Predictions: Brace Yourselves

“The commodity you’re selling is BS – cheap, abundant, infinite,” says White, echoing the sentiments shared in many a boardroom meeting across industries. Here’s a lucky prediction: the better these launderers get, the more crimes of every variety will blossom like weeds in your untended garden. As White aptly puts it, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” But in the world of money laundering, that simply means: the higher the stakes, the more likely it is that your financial dreams will drift into the shady underbelly of criminality.
