“The HR lead at my husband’s workplace proudly flaunts this as their email signature:”

    “Have *´¨)

    ¸.·´¸.·*´¨) ¸.·*¨)

    (¸.·´ (¸.·´ * a Wonderful Day!

Ah yes, the majestic email signature. The last bastion of creativity in a world where professionalism often reigns, it serves as a beacon of light—or in this case, a distress signal. My husband, ever the consummate imitator, decided to hijack this jubilant signature for his out-of-office auto-reply during vacation time, because why not mix business with delightful absurdity?

To elevate the experience of his coworkers, he opted for Comic Sans, the official font of irony. Watching Boomers gush over this whimsical touch is like witnessing a dinosaur swoon at the idea of an avocado toast brunch. “Oh dear, he must be so creative!” they exclaim, presumably while wondering why their coffee’s cold.

On the other side of the generational divide, you’ve got Gen X and the younger folk, clutching their faces in horror. You can practically hear the group chat erupt: “MY EYES! WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME 😭” — because if there’s one thing that unites younger generations, it’s a shared disdain for Comic Sans. Heaven forbid we use a font that elicits actual emotions!

It’s almost comedic how an email signature can spark such extreme reactions. One side celebrates it like finding a five-dollar bill in an old jacket, while the other recoils as if they’ve just watched a cringe compilation of 90s sitcoms. Who knew a simple sentiment for a ‘wonderful day’ could cause such a rift?

What’s even more extraordinary is how this little signature experiment reveals our societal approach to communication. The older generation thrives on bouquets of flowers and glittering rainbows, while their younger counterparts are tangled in existential angst. Shouldn’t we just agree to disagree over font choices and save the turmoil for more pressing matters—like whether avocado toast is worth the price?

In the end, while my husband’s email signature may not solve global issues or make your coffee better, it does spark joy… for some. Perhaps we should all consider drafting our own signature that showcases exactly who we are. Just make sure it’s not Comic Sans—unless you’re in the mood for a generational roast!
