These days, Denise Winkelman is the comedic goldmine California didn’t know it needed—serving up belly laughs like a barista on caffeine. But rewind back to the 2000s, and you’d find her under the fluorescent lights of professional wrestling, where she went by the formidable name of Dr. Melvin Winkelman—an eccentric mad scientist with a fondness for magical (and possibly Gatorade-impaired) potions. On August 19, she’s set to mash these two worlds together in her debut comedy special, appropriately dubbed Bougie on a Budget.
In anticipation of this laugh fest making its rounds on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube, Denise squashed a chat with WrestleZone’s Ella Jay. They dove deep into her comedy escapades and wrestling exploits—because why settle for one career when you can dramatically flop at two? In Bougie on a Budget, Denise hilariously intertwines her journey as a transgender woman, a Los Angeles dweller, and a certified lover of fashion.
“It’s a treasure trove of tales from my small-town upbringing in a conservative family, presented with a healthy dose of humor,” Denise explained. “We’ll cover garage sale chic, my grandmother’s bandage skills, small-town home remedies, and the wonderfully bizarre landscape of modern dating in Los Angeles as a trans woman. I just really enjoy therapy, and, spoiler alert, you might find some of that in there too. We aim to make it all thoroughly amusing, topical, and inclusive. There’s something for everyone—like a buffet of silliness, but with a side of realness. I’m proud of how that amalgamation turned out.”
Delving into the Wrestling Archive
At the ripe age of 23, Denise secluded herself in Kentucky, not for a retreat but to pursue a glorious career in professional wrestling. Not far off in Cincinnati, she became a staple at the Northern Wrestling Federation, an establishment once home to talents like “Wildcat” Chris Harris and Abyss. Legend has it that the infamous Dr. Melvin Winkelman was ordained by none other than Karl Anderson, who apparently possesses the alchemical abilities to create wrestling personas—and perhaps cocktails.
“Karl had been grinding for a year longer than I had, and one day he whistles me aside and says, ‘Hey, Winkelman, want to scare the boys with a mad scientist promo?’ and just like that, I became an academician of absurdity,” Denise reminisced. “We began as Doctor Melvin Socrates until they decreed it should be Dr. Melvin Winkelman—because why not make it creepier?”
As Dr. Melvin Winkelman, Denise adopted a whimsical theatricality reminiscent of WWE’s D-Generation X. “I perfected the art of making outrageous statements that also tickled the funny bone,” she said, describing her signature style. “Like, ‘Hey Karl Anderson, you look like a jock with a bad haircut! Prepare your transition into a billy goat!’ The absurdity was overwhelming. And let’s not forget the ‘science experiments’ with Gatorade that would perhaps qualify as an NCAA scandal today.”
The Lifelong Bond with Karl Anderson
Now a free-agent indie wrestling sensation, Karl Anderson once cohabited with Denise in their quest for wrestling stardom during the mid-2000s—a classic tale of two roommates chasing their dreams, while simultaneously demolishing pizza boxes.
“I met him in ‘03, on the first day of wrestling school, and promptly moved into his apartment after his previous roommate fled in terror,” Denise recounted. “He was the sun while I was merely a flickering candle—always entertaining, while I was the charming wallflower in the corner.”
“Our dynamic was golden,” she reflected. “I learned so much about professionalism from him—his secret? Hard work—even when no one was watching. He was like some sort of wrestling Yoda, always reviewing tape and pushing himself in the gym. Let’s just say he was the Michael Jordan of wrestling in Cincinnati, while I was still figuring out how to tie my boots.”
In the end, Anderson ascended to New Japan Pro-Wrestling glory while Denise took a left turn toward the land of comedy. Surprisingly, their paths crossed again when Anderson returned to be the best man at Denise’s wedding—because what could scream “celebrate love” more than ex-wrestlers exchanging vows over a slice of wedding cake?
Since then, Anderson has concluded a second run with WWE and begun trotting the indie circuit post-release, raking in nostalgia points left and right.
