Trump 2.0: A Lesson in Legal Gymnastics

As we wrap up week two of the Trump 2.0 extravaganza, it’s clear we’re not just dealing with a sequel; we’ve entered a blockbuster territory. If one journalist friend of mine is to be believed, we were bracing ourselves for a mere 2,000-volt jolt of MAGA. Surprise! We received a full-blown 20,000-volt detonation that’s left us gaping. I didn’t know a political reboot could resemble a fireworks display gone rogue.

The sheer audacity of the new administration’s maneuvers has elevated disbelief to an art form. Sure, Democrats have their faults—timidity, engaging in rational discourse, and a penchant for non-aggression that can put a caffeinated sloth to shame. But even amidst this, the tidal wave of executive orders and head-spinning appointees has sent many into a collective state of wide-eyed bewilderment. Apparently, we’ve needed a bit of time to process what feels like a political carnival ride without the safety harness.

Now that we’re on Day 12 of this new, thrilling ride, the guiding principles that appear to be steering the ship are crystal clear. Buckle up!

    1. What’s Law to You?

First up, let’s talk about “settled law,” or as it appears in Trump’s universe, a suggestion. Recent actions have shown that there’s the law that the Trump team approves of and the law that is more or less struck from existence—like that awkward high school photo we all wish we could erase. A prime example? The Office of Management and Budget’s valiant attempt to block all federal grants and loans. These are funneled from Congress, by the way—a detail our friends in the administration seem to have found amusing.

    2. Loyalty Above All

Moving on to our second guiding principle: independence within the government is as mythical as Bigfoot. The only currency that matters? Loyalty to Trump and his desire for an everlasting spotlight. It’s a political landscape where whistleblowers are met with confusion akin to finding a cat wearing a sweater—endearing yet utterly perplexing.

    3. Diversity, Who Needs It?

Lastly, we arrive at the pièce de résistance: diversity is apparently the villain in this story. The federal government, according to this view, has a dual mission: not only to halt progress on diversity initiatives but to actively reverse them, much like a reverse gear on a truck barreling down a hill. It’s as though they believe their job description reads “Press Rewind on Equity.”

Let’s take our first principle for a spin, shall we? There are whispers (no, not those kind of whispers; let’s keep it PG) about legal challenges to Trump’s executive whims. Take that funding blockade, for example. They’re betting on a slew of lawsuits descending like confetti at a parade, getting as far as the Supreme Court, where, by some twist of fate, they’re gambling on a generous ruling that overlooks the Impoundment Act of 1974. Because why respect the law when you can use it as a prop in your political theatre?

In summary, as we navigate this dazzling political enterprise, it becomes apparent that the mantra is simple: rules are for mere mortals. The Trump administration stands as a testament to the adage “it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission”—assuming, of course, that the judicial system continues to play along with this unique brand of political improv.
