This past August, I participated in a small workshop for Midwest bloggers in the beautiful city of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The city graciously provided us with complimentary lodging, meals, and activities, and I couldn’t be happier for this experience. Although I had never visited Sheboygan before, I quickly discovered that it’s a fantastic destination for families.

Did you know Sheboygan is often referred to as the “Malibu of the Midwest”? This is because it boasts remarkable freshwater surfing opportunities on Lake Michigan, supported by its own vibrant surf culture. Family-friendly activities abound here, making it a hidden gem worth exploring.

Why Sheboygan is a Family-Friendly Destination

Located about five and a half hours from the Twin Cities, Sheboygan offers stunning views of Lake Michigan, friendly locals, and affordable activities. If your family enjoys picturesque lake views, delicious cuisine, and engaging experiences that won’t break the bank, Sheboygan should be on your travel radar. Let’s delve into five highlights from my visit that families will love.

Top 5 Family-Friendly Attractions in Sheboygan

    1. Bookworm Gardens

First on the list is Bookworm Gardens, a delightful garden bringing children’s literature to life. With winding paths filled with flowers, sculptures, and displays from beloved stories like *Charlotte’s Web*, *The Three Little Pigs*, and *The Very Hungry Caterpillar*, it’s a whimsical haven for kids. While children can climb and interact with exhibits, adults can appreciate the serene beauty of this enchanting space. Admission is affordable, with tickets priced at $12 for adults and $10 for children ages 3-17, and donations are welcome to help support the nonprofit.

    2. John Michael Kohler Arts Center

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center surprised us with its unique approach, focusing not only on art but also on the artists’ lives. This intimate museum allows visitors to learn about the creators’ backgrounds, inspirations, and even experience reconstructions of their living environments. The thoughtfully curated exhibits are free, making it a must-visit stop for families, even those with kids who may not consider themselves “art lovers.”

    3. Kohler-Andrae State Park

If your family enjoys outdoor activities, Kohler-Andrae State Park is a fantastic spot for hiking, picnicking, and beach fun. Just south of Sheboygan, it features stunning sand dunes and a long stretch of Lake Michigan beach, perfect for spending a relaxed day outdoors. A day pass for your vehicle is reasonably priced, granting access to ample space for your family to enjoy the natural beauty of Wisconsin.

    4. Blue Harbor Resort

Our accommodation at Blue Harbor Resort provided a perfect family-friendly environment. With its indoor waterpark, beach access, and scenic walking path, this resort is an excellent choice for families visiting Sheboygan. Even if you don’t stay overnight, you can enjoy a meal at The Beacon restaurant or a drink with a gorgeous sunset view from On the Rocks Bar & Grill at the resort.

    5. Culinary Delights in Sheboygan

One of the most delightful surprises of my trip was the quality and affordability of the local cuisine. Our family enjoyed meals at several local establishments, including Harry’s Diner, a retro-style diner perfect for hearty breakfasts; Frankie’s Pub & Grill, famous for its giant burgers; and Il Ritrovo, renowned for its authentic wood-fired pizzas. Don’t forget to visit Eb Flo Coffeehouse for their famous croffle and Sly’s Midtown Saloon, where you can try traditional bratwurst in this Bratwurst Capital of the World.

Travel Tips for Families Visiting Sheboygan

Here are a few budget-friendly tips to enhance your family trip:
    – **Drive instead of fly** to save on transportation costs. The journey from the Twin Cities is manageable and scenic.
    – **Visit during weekdays** to snag cheaper hotel rates.
    – **Take advantage of free attractions** like the Arts Center and the picturesque lakefront.
    – **Pack snacks or picnic supplies** to enjoy at the many parks and green spaces.

    Final Thoughts

Sheboygan proved to be a wonderful surprise, combining breathtaking lake views, creative attractions, and a host of free or low-cost activities, making it an ideal getaway for families. This charming city offers just the right balance of adventure and relaxation, encouraging families to reconnect and create unforgettable memories.
