Florida Mom Sells Disney Passes After a Decade Due to Rising Costs

Ah, the enchantment of Disney is hard to rival—unless you’re faced with budget constraints. This is the challenge that Miranda, a devoted mom of three from Orlando, Florida, recently encountered.

Saying Goodbye to Disney Annual Passes

Having been a loyal annual passholder for over a decade, Miranda and her family regularly enjoyed the magic of Walt Disney World, often embarking on spontaneous trips and savoring exclusive passholder benefits. However, after several price hikes and policy changes, Miranda made the tough choice not to renew her family’s annual passes.

    The Impact of Rising Costs

As Florida residents, Miranda’s family initially benefitted from discounted Florida Resident annual pass options. Yet, she remarked, “What used to cost about $500 per pass has skyrocketed to over $1,000.” The steep increase in ticket prices and the recent changes in the Disney experience—such as mandatory park reservations—diminished the allure of spontaneity, making it harder for Miranda to justify the high cost of passes.

    Calculating the Savings

According to Disney Tourist Blog, annual pass options currently range from $489 (plus tax) for the Pixie Dust Pass to $1,629 (plus tax) for the Disney Incredi-Pass. Miranda’s family, holding the middle-tier Pirate Passes that cost $869 each, would save over $4,000 annually by not renewing their passes. “That money can be better allocated toward other pressing expenses, like my oldest child’s impending college tuition,” she explained.

    A Shift in Family Plans

Despite giving up their annual passes, Miranda’s family still plans to visit Disney World occasionally. “We’ll budget carefully for tickets and take advantage of discounted multi-day options,” she said, indicating a shift in their approach to theme park visits.

    Exploring New Attractions in Orlando

Now free from the constraints of maintaining Disney annual passes, Miranda’s family is eager to explore other attractions and parks in Orlando. “We’ve primarily visited Disney World all these years. Now, we’re excited to check out new places,” she shared. Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure are near the top of their list, particularly for the intriguing Harry Potter-themed attractions that Miranda’s son is eager to experience.

    Embracing a New Adventure

With annual passes at Universal costing less than those at Disney, Miranda is optimistic about discovering value in new experiences. She’s also considering a trip to Legoland with her daughter and other local attractions like Fun Spot, ICON Park, and waterparks, all of which become more financially feasible without the burden of Disney passes.

    Finding Joy Beyond Disney

Miranda remains hopeful that this transition will lead her family to new favorite destinations. “Orlando has so much to offer beyond Disney World,” she noted, reflecting on the potential for weekend adventures to explore other Florida cities now that their travel plans are not constrained by Disney’s annual pass renewal schedule.

    Conclusion: A Fresh Perspective

In summary, while parting with Disney World annual passes was a tough decision for Miranda, the financial freedom gained and the chance to explore a variety of attractions in Orlando provide a silver lining. By prioritizing their budget, Miranda’s family is set to discover more of what the theme park capital of the world has to offer.
