We had the delightful misfortune of chatting with the one and only Jason Hedden. His insights, below, are a cocktail of wisdom shaken with a dash of irony.

Jason, What’s Your Take on Risk?

Some might argue that pursuing a career in the arts is akin to juggling flaming swords while blindfolded. Newsflash: I disagree. Dedicating your life to a “safer” job while harboring a passion for something else? Now that’s where true risk lies. I know plenty of folks perfectly ensconced in the soul-crushing bliss of their “good” jobs. Miserable? Oh, you bet. But let’s get real — bills need to be paid, and that’s just simple math. I’ve dabbled in standup comedy since my early forties, emerging from the cocoon of my college theatre professor days, and the only thing I can promise is that my family expects groceries over punchlines.

A Balancing Act or a Tightrope Walk?

As the sole income earner in my household, my journey into comedy resembles a high-stakes balancing act: the main gig pays the bills while the side hustle brings laughter and the occasional awkward silence. Thanks to my day job, I don’t need to worry about transportation fees for out-of-town gigs — not when you have vacation days to cram in some comedy. Yet, as with any circus performance, finding that golden balance is often easier said than done. Anyone else ever tried walking a tightrope while holding a coffee?

    Let’s Dive Into Your Career

I wear many hats: actor, director, teacher, comedian, and writer. It took a while for me to own those last two titles, as if they were reserved for the elitist club at the top of the comedy food chain. But here I am, gracefully slinking out of my self-imposed box. The secret? Following my interests like breadcrumbs on a trail, always hungry for new lessons. Plus, it’s a good idea to run with folks faster than you — unless you prefer being last in the race or, you know, need to catch your breath before the big finish.

Why Acting and Teaching Don’t Have to Be a Love-Hate Relationship

Ever had the pleasure of being asked, “Oh, so you want to be an actor or a teacher? Can’t be both!”? Cue the collective eye roll. Here’s the kicker: my acting chops make me a better educator, and my teaching experience? A fabulous secret weapon in my comedy arsenal. Who knew theatre skills could translate to making people laugh? Confidence blooms from experience, though it’s not like you’ll find that in a self-help book.

A Shoutout to the Real MVPs

In this grand performance of life, it’s clear that my lovely wife and son deserve top billing for their unwavering support of my comedic escapades. They’re like my personal cheerleading squad, sans pom-poms. And I can’t skip mentioning the seasoned comics who took me under their wings, especially Henry Cho, who has been my guiding light in the chaos of the comedy business. If you ever wonder where wit and wisdom collide, just look him up. Spoiler alert: it’s worth it!

    Wrapping It All Up

So, what’s the takeaway here? Dive into your passion — but make sure to keep the financial boat afloat. Don’t wait for someone to hand you a chance; sometimes, you have to break out the party hats and create your own opportunities. Comedic gold isn’t just about being hilarious; it’s also about being resourceful while attempting to keep it all together. And if you stumble? Well, that’s just part of the act.
