Gilbert Gottfried’s Humor Caused Universal to Exceed Budget on Problem Child

    Universal Pictures

In 1990, the utterly hilarious Gilbert Gottfried secured his legendary status with a film titled “Problem Child.” This delightful romp was later dubbed Universal Pictures’ most profitable movie of the year. Ironically, the studio didn’t catch on to Gottfried’s comedic magic until after they had blown their budget with all those extra footages of film.

The movie follows John Ritter and Amy Yasbeck as they navigate the joys and heckles of adoption. Here, Gottfried stepped in as the adoption agent, because apparently, who else would want that gig? Director David Dugan found himself at odds with Universal’s powers-that-be for allowing Gottfried to unleash his improvisational genius on set. This misunderstanding ended up costing the company more than just a few extra dollars.

“I got yelled at — really early in shooting. I received a call from the Universal vice president, inquiring, ‘What are you doing? You’re shooting so much film!’ In one day, I shot 18,000 feet — the next day was a whopping 20,000 feet! This was back when film wasn’t just a hobby— it was a whole wallet-eating monster. The studio clamored, ‘What’s going on? You’re way over budget!’ I simply replied, ‘We’re making a comedy! And we have Gilbert Gottfried. When I yell ‘action,’ he does the script and then just… keeps going. So, um, let’s just see what happens here.’ They eventually conceded, ‘Alright, you’re off the hook because he’s that funny!’

Tragically, the world lost its most recognizable voice since the dawn of time itself, Gilbert Gottfried, who recently passed away after a long-term battle with a rather complicated illness. His nemesis? None other than recurrent ventricular tachycardia, giving “heart problem” a whole new level of irony.

Gottfried will forever be remembered as that unforgettable parrot, Iago, in Disney’s “Aladdin.” But let’s get real— after all those years, that role couldn’t encompass his legendary craziness. In his later career, he was able to make appearances solely based on his unique voice. Honestly, if you could do that, wouldn’t you? Talk about living the dream!

His recent comedic gem was a cameo in the Adult Swim phenomenon “Smiling Friends.” In that glorious 30-second moment, he portrayed God—yes, you read that right—and while his face was shrouded in light, his voice echoed like an unforgettable punchline. If you’re missing him, just hop over to catch that heartwarming moment; it’s worth a chuckle or two.

As for Gottfried’s final film project, the aptly named “Hassle in the Castle,” it appears to still be in limbo— pre-production style. So, are we waiting on a masterpiece or simply a ‘hassle’? Only time will tell, my friend.
