Marc Maron shares amusing messages from Bob Odenkirk following his heart attack, noting he didn’t see any light.

In the latest revelation, the concept of heaven has been officially debunked, courtesy of Bob Odenkirk, whose near-death experience seems to have a stellar sense of humor.

During a recent episode of SiriusXM’s Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend—a title that suggests a support group for lonely comedians—Marc Maron took the opportunity to reflect on the joys of aging. As it often happens in these discussions, the conversation veered towards Odenkirk’s 2021 escapade with mortality, during which he had a heart attack on the set of Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad prequel that seemed to thrive on tension.

“He experienced a heart attack in Albuquerque, the charming town that birthed me,” Maron shared, because nothing bonds friends like shared cardiac episodes. He recounted being in touch with Odenkirk, who had just made a triumphant, if slightly terrifying, return from the proverbial other side. “I texted him after the incident, and let me tell you, the man is a master of post-heart attack humor. I said, ‘Glad you’re okay. Heart attacks are scary. It’s Maron,’ which certainly sparked a twinge of levity in a dire moment,” he quipped.

Odenkirk reportedly responded with typical wit, “Super scary, Marc. I basically died for a little while. And I have to tell you, I didn’t see a single halo or pearly gate. But thanks to my elite medical crew and their surgical wizardry, I’m back in action! Hope you’re doing great, by the way!” Who knew post-mortem text banter could be so uplifting?

Maron couldn’t resist a jab, replying warmly, “Glad my hometown hospital saved you! Welcome back from the void.” Odenkirk, proving that death apparently gives you a new perspective on family hospitals and celestial mysteries, shot back, “Absolutely! Fantastic doctors and nurses at Presbyterian. By the way, did I mention I saw zero light while I was dead? So yeah, the whole heaven thing? Total hoax. Follow the money.” Talk about a punchline that lands harder than a heart attack.

Odenkirk, now a sprightly 62, had what he termed a “small heart attack” while filming the final season of Saul—a fitting end to the series where tension is practically a character. Later, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he revealed that he has no memory of the fateful day, declaring it a complete blank. We’re all just delighted it wasn’t a blank check for an angel investment.

In yet another stroke of absurdity, Odenkirk mused, “What’s truly bizarre is that I don’t recall acting at all during that day. It’s like watching a movie where you’re the lead but have zero recollection of filming it. It’s a strange feeling realizing you just lost a week and a half of your life. Clean slate! It’s a strange experience, akin to getting a refund on your sanity.”

For those interested in surviving life’s little hiccups (like heart attacks or existential crises), consider this a witty warning: the universe has a sense of humor, and your life might just be more entertaining than the afterlife ever could be.
