Reliance Retail’s Karta Ceremony: The Newest IKEA Assembly for Executives

NEW DELHI: Reliance Retail, India’s favorite retail giant and the absolute wizards of expansion, have cracked the code to onboarding executives with a bafflingly amusing touch—what they’re calling the “karta ceremony.” Because who needs boring old paperwork when you can have a blindfolded initiation rite in front of a bunch of witnesses?

Picture this: a fresh executive, ready to take the reins of a shiny new store, is blindfolded and ceremoniously seated on a chair, surrounded by employees, vendors, and—wait for it—family members. Yes, nothing says “welcome to the corporate jungle” quite like being put on display like a trophy at a hunting lodge.

Once they survive this mildly terrifying ordeal that lasts just hours (because what’s the rush?), the keys to the store are ceremoniously handed over. Surely, this is the highlight of any career—talk about a dramatic entrance! Forget about traditional HR, this is a blend of community theater and corporate strategy we didn’t know we needed.

In the latest quarterly report (you know, the one where numbers are bandied about like they’re confetti), Reliance Retail, under the illustrious shadow of Mukesh Ambani, boasts a mind-boggling 17,225 stores. Yes, because what’s more comforting than a corporate overlord with enough store locations to circle the globe multiple times? Who doesn’t want to lose themselves in the sweet embrace of their local retail behemoth?

Reliance’s Chief HR Officer, G R Venkatesh (an ever-chipper HR guru), took a moment from their evidently endless workload to enlighten the masses: “Retail is one of the most manpower-intensive sectors.” Ah, thank you for this shocking revelation, Captain Obvious! Is this pep talk a teaser for the latest thriller or a workplace policy? Either way, it’s hard not to appreciate the brewing camaraderie—what could go wrong when you’re literally treating colleagues as family, right?

Each store’s karta ceremony is tailored to the local customs. So if you’re in Assam, expect a vibrant mix of tradition and mild panic for the newbie. Venkatesh reminds us that when a leader is inducted as the head of the family, they just don’t punch a clock anymore—they’re apparently expected to serve dinner, too. Talk about unrealistic job expectations and an unhealthy work-life balance!

Reliance recently pulled a corporate slight-of-hand, absorbing Metro’s wholesale business and—surprise!—over 3,500 employees. Their workforce now swells to over 4.18 lakh (that’s 418,000 for those of us less inclined to utilize the metric system). It’s like they’re collecting employees like Pokémon; gotta catch ’em all! So how do they keep these vast numbers happy? Venkatesh lists a trifecta of policies, but we all know the trick: the age-old art of pretending you care.

As Mukesh Ambani himself boldly proclaimed during his Annual General Meeting, they aim to create employment for over 10 lakh people. Because when you’ve practically cornered the market, why not throw in a few million jobs as a parting gift? In FY22, their consolidated turnover stood at a staggering Rs 1.99 lakh crore. That’s no small change, folks! Let’s just hope the karta ceremony includes a feature where they sprinkle a few rupees on those who survive the blindfolded initiation.
