Tribute to Rosalia Richter: A Life of Resilience and Love

Rosalia Richter, aged 91, from Twin Lakes, WI, and formerly of Chicago, IL, peacefully entered God’s Kingdom on March 2, 2026. Born on September 26, 1934, in Krndja, Yugoslavia, Rosalia was the youngest of four children in the family of Franz Rottenbuecher and Anna Held. Her early life was shaped by the rural charm of farm life, where she developed practical skills like cooking and sewing while helping tend to the family’s livestock and crops.

    Early Life and Education

Growing up in a small village, Rosalia attended a one-room school and frequently worshipped at the local Catholic church with her family. However, the escalating political tension in 1943 forced Rosalia and her family to flee their home on foot, seeking refuge in Austria. This tumultuous period saw the family endure unimaginable hardships, including the tragic loss of loved ones during violent attacks in their village.

    New Beginnings in Austria

After settling in Ligist, Austria, Rosalia and her sisters took on various domestic jobs to support their family. A chance encounter in the mid-1950s at a social event would change Rosalia’s life forever. She reconnected with Rudolf Richter, a childhood acquaintance, and after a joyful evening of dancing, their relationship blossomed into a courtship that led to marriage on February 11, 1956, in a wedding dress Rosalia had sewn herself with her mother’s assistance.

    Journey to the United States

In 1956, with growing support from Rudy’s family who were immigrating to the United States, Rosalia and Rudolf made the bold decision to move to America. As Rosalia was pregnant with their first child, the couple embarked on a 9-day journey across the Atlantic Ocean, eventually arriving at Ellis Island before making Chicago their home for the next 50 years. Balancing work and family, Rosalia took up second-shift factory jobs, all while caring for her household during the day, fulfilling the American Dream for her family through hard work and sacrifice.

    Life in Chicago

Their family cherished trips to Foster Beach on Lake Michigan and summer memories at their property in Necedah, WI. As a mother, Rosalia established a strict yet loving home environment, guiding her children through the challenges they faced as first-generation Americans. Known for her frugality and resourcefulness, she often reassured her children with the phrase, “We have food at home!” Her legendary cooking skills, featuring dishes like schnitzels and goulash, will always be fondly remembered by her loved ones.

    A Grandmother’s Love

As grandchildren began to fill the family in the 1980s, Rosalia embraced her role as a grandmother. Her nurturing spirit softened, allowing her to prioritize creating a joyful home filled with love over maintaining a perfectly clean space. Following the passing of her husband in 1997, Rosalia remained strong and independent, managing her life with care and faith until her own passing at age 91. She lived a life rich with values imparted through simple living and warmth, leaving a profound legacy for her family to carry forward.

    Legacy and Celebration of Life

Rosalia Richter is survived by her beloved children, Carl, John (Sherrie), and Heidi; and cherished grandchildren, including Lisa (David) Finke and William (Valerie S.) Richter, among others. She will be lovingly remembered by great-grandchildren and extended family in Austria and Canada. Reunited in death with her parents and siblings, this matriarch’s departure leaves a poignant void in the hearts of her loved ones.

    Visitation and Burial Services

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Rosalia’s life during visitation on March 5, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Haase-Lockwood & Associates Funeral Home in Twin Lakes, WI. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on March 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Constance Catholic Church in Chicago. Following the mass, Rosalia will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Rosalia’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Haase-Lockwood & Associates Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to serve the Richter family during this time of remembrance.
