Tajikistan’s National Bank issues a warning regarding fake and novelty somoni bills.

Social media users report seeing somoni banknotes labeled as “funny banknotes”; photo / NBT.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to hold a “funny banknote”? Well, the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) just issued a public service announcement that could make you reconsider that money-making joke. Yes, it turns out your beloved somoni might be living a double life as a counterfeit currency star!

In a stunning reveal, the NBT announced that some individuals are pulling a fast one by slapping a fake mustache on our good ol’ somoni bills and letting them loose on the unsuspecting public. Apparently, color copying techniques have progressed far beyond your wildest dreams—or nightmares, depending on your bank account balance. The national financial regulator blames this on … well, the usual suspects: those sneaky individuals who clearly skipped their ethics class.

Let’s break it down: counterfeit bills are popping up in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 somoni. Interesting choices, considering it’s always the big bills that like to play dress-up. And, just in case you were wondering, social media has dubbed these mischievous little devils “funny banknotes.” Who knew currency could have a comedic side?

Before you run out to snag the latest in counterfeit fashion, here’s a tip from our pals at the NBT: while these bills might have the same dimensions as authentic currency, they lack the vital security features that tend to elude your average con artist. Things like watermarks and specialized printing techniques are decidedly absent. It’s almost as if someone forgot to read the “How to Make Real Money” handbook!

The NBT kindly reminds everyone that producing or circulating counterfeit money is, believe it or not, against the law. Shocker! So, if you’re tempted to take a crack at it, think again. You might find yourself in a disagreement with the Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan, and they can be rather unforgiving about little things like… oh, I don’t know, stealing money?

In a last-ditch effort to prevent financial mayhem, the NBT urges citizens to keep their eyes peeled for any suspicious currency. So, if you do find yourself staring down some “funny” banknotes, just take that fake cash to the nearest branch of the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the State Committee for National Security. Who doesn’t enjoy a little field trip to report counterfeit cash?

In the world of currency, the stakes are high and the laughs may be scarce. So, if you’re out there trying to save a buck (or somoni), ensure it’s the real deal and not just a comedian in disguise. Happy cash handling, and may your wallets remain as light as your wallet’s sense of humor—unless it’s filled with counterfeit bills, in which case your money-saving hacks suddenly become a crime scene!
