The Funniest Failures by Inmates in Their Escape Attempts

Let’s face it—nobody dreams of prison time unless they confuse it with a long-term spa retreat. Yet, for some inmates, the idea of a great escape can lead to laughter… at their expense. Forget about the vigilant guards and elaborate plans; these are tales of sheer, unfiltered hilarity where prisoners outdo even the wildest cartoon antics of Wile E. Coyote.

The Worst Shawshank Redemption Reenactment Ever

    prison escape

Inspired by cinematic brilliance, one Brazilian inmate attempted to escape using a sewage system—just like Andy did in “The Shawshank Redemption.” Unfortunately, there were no plot twists in the Brazilian remake. He promptly got stuck, earning himself a good old-fashioned mud mask courtesy of the human waste. Not quite the glamorous escape he envisioned, but hey, at least he could call it a “crappy situation.”

While he didn’t win any freedom medals, he did land an applause-worthy performance worthy of an Oscar for “Worst Escape Ever.” Two guards had to rescue him—how’s that for adding insult to injury?

Banging on the Prison Guard’s Door Looking for a Phone

Breaking free from prison is hard; getting caught again is ridiculously easy—especially if you find yourself knocking on a guard’s door for a phone. Ask James Russell, who took a breather from his escape through the Olympic Correction Center only to stumble into the cabin of a prison guard. Talk about bad luck!

After a scuffle that would fail to impress even in a low-budget action flick, Russell was re-captured faster than you can say “Oops!” One phone call, and not the good kind, later, he was back behind bars with a new story—one that likely involved a lot of head-shaking and facepalms from the guards.

A White Man Poses as a Black Man He Didn’t Know Was Black

In a mind-boggling display of choice-making, Kenneth Burnum decided his escape plan could benefit from a little “undercover” flair—in the form of donning the identity of an inmate who happened to be Black. Spoiler alert: it backfired spectacularly. If there’s anything scarier than being caught escaping, it’s finding yourself caught trying to be someone you’re not.

His disguise was about as convincing as a three-legged dog in a sprint. After impulse acting his way through identifying papers and clearly failing to pass the “Are you Black?” test, Burnum was re-arrested and promptly charged with “Attempted Escape” and “Criminal Impersonation.” Talk about a crash and burn, right?

Reporting Being Attacked … by Officers Trying to Stop You from Escaping

In an escape plan that would make any ninja weep tears of laughter, Alexander Scaramastro managed to flee with minimal planning, ending in a getaway car driven by his pal Ramos. Not quite the crime-fighting duo he imagined, Ramos skidded to a halt yelling about an attack, just steps from the police station. Choosing to report being “attacked” by the very officers trying to keep him from escaping? Genius!

Instead of escaping into the sunset, Ramos ended up wearing handcuffs alongside his buddy. So much for the road trip they never took; their quick detour back into custody earned them additional time to ponder over their getaway gone wrong.

Dr. Mudd: The Lincoln Conspirator Who Forgot He Was Too Famous to Escape

    dr samuel mudd

Dr. Samuel Mudd, the man infamous for merely fixing John Wilkes Booth’s leg, thought he could escape from Fort Jefferson with a plan involving a crew member. What could go wrong? Well, let’s just say that when you’re already famous for being associated with the assassination of a president, a change of clothes isn’t going to make you incognito.

After hiding on a ship to freedom, Mudd was quickly recognized. Turns out, celebrity status doesn’t lend itself well to stealth. Before he could say “oops,” he found himself back in chains—arguably the least thrilling sequel to his already famous plotline.

The Prisoner Who Escaped and Failed … After Three Days in Minimum Security

Christopher Boscacci made his daring escape after just three days in minimum security. In what can only be described as a classic case of “the grass is always greener,” he thought freedom was just a fence—a barbed one, to be exact—away. Leaving behind a sandal as a calling card, Boscacci was caught faster than an ill-fated Instagram post. Seriously, who can’t wait three more days before attempting to flee?

After his swift return to maximum security, he certainly learned that parental advice to “think twice” works even better for escape plans. What was meant to be a minor setback turned into a felonious charge—the ultimate irony for someone who wanted to beat the system after only 72 hours. Someone hand this guy a calendar!

Escaping Prison in Trash Bags is an Even Worse Idea Than You Think

    prison escape trash bags

Ah, the ingenious plan of attempting to escape prison hidden in trash bags. Sidney Neves da Cruz and Carlos Eduardo Barbosa Pereira thought they were onto something revolutionary when they tried to blend in with actual garbage. Spoiler: it ended as you might expect.

Upon discovery, they probably regretted the lack of foresight because no one truly wants to be the star of a real-life “Dumb and Dumber” sequel. Officers are not typically fooled by moving trash. Let this serve as a reminder that sometimes, a bad idea is just a bad idea—regardless of how desperate one feels!
