The Tricky World of Tradwives: The New Age Homemakers

Ah, the tradwife phenomenon! More conservatives are diving headfirst into the deep end of traditional sex roles, all while holding a squishy definition of what “tradition” even is. Enter the tradwives—those who like to gather around the kitchen table, preparing meals, as they gently mock the modern feminist’s quest for independence. Because who needs emotional autonomy when you can whip up a mean casserole, right?

As I’ve previously outlined, there are essentially three flavors of tradwives: the “full-time homemaker” who’s either an excellent cook or a really good Netflix binge-watcher; the “eras” tradwife—she works briefly before children and then promptly returns to her role as a stay-at-home mother, likely in 1950s attire; and the “side-hustle tradwife”—the American dreamer who works part-time in between nap times. The last one is America’s answer to “how do we make this all work without losing our sanity?”

A staggering 70% of American mothers work, and apparently the majority have opted for part-time gigs rather than diving into the chaos of full-time employment. A 2015 Gallup poll revealed that nearly 60% of mothers with kids under 18 would prefer to be homemakers. So, it begs the question: are we raising children or drafting the next American novel when it’s nap time? Spoiler alert: the answer is usually both.

The Remote Work Revolution: Where Pajamas Meet Productivity

Upon conducting in-depth interviews with eight mothers (note: all classy college graduates), I discovered they can energetically juggle part-time work while raising kids under five. These moms boast a household income surpassing the meager national average for college grads under 30. It’s a neat little trick—have kids early, throw in a dash of church attendance, and voilà, domestic bliss! Seriously, who needs a high-powered career when your life is one big Pinterest board of domestic achievements?

None of these superwomen work more than 20 hours a week—because, you know, who wants to overexert themselves? Half of them work remotely, making their schedules more flexible than a yoga instructor on espresso. Agnes, for instance, manages to fit her responsibilities in before dawn, wooing the day ahead of the chaos. Her job? Personnel specialist! Pfft. Never mind the sky-high salaries; we’re aiming for Pinterest-worthy parenting!

Why Work? The American Dream, But Make It Fashion

For these marvelous mothers, their part-time hustle is the golden ticket to achieving that all-elusive American Dream. Agnes casually mentions that she and her husband “need two incomes to live in a fancy suburb,” because apparently, the picket fence doesn’t come with just one salary anymore. They believe in living well, not just living. And there lies the irony: it’s not just about money; it’s the collective “we can have our cake, and eat it too”—while simultaneously frosting it and then sending the kids off to private school.

These side-hustlers are not just cash cows—they’re also investment vehicles for their husbands’ careers. Think of them as the wind beneath their husband’s wings! They tell their husbands sweetly, “Pursue your dreams, honey; I’ve got the money on standby.” Agatha, for example, supports her college professor husband while gracefully mentoring coeds—and she does it all while wearing her “Supermom” cape. How inspiring!

It’s All About Balance and Optics

Most of the moms I chatted with unequivocally reject the feminist model. They don’t associate with childless rebels; instead, they prefer good old-fashioned advice on child-rearing. Surprisingly, they firmly believe that their husbands should take on the hefty responsibility of providing for the family. In their minds, it’s simple: “Husband does the grueling work, while I throw fabulous playdates.”

And when it comes to juggling responsibilities, they will adapt like seasoned acrobats! Sure, a second child might require a full transition to homemaking, but they are ready for the challenge. But amidst all the chaos, some mothers find fulfillment in their side activities. Because let’s face it: working part-time is the ultimate way to validate your existence. It ensures that “Mom” isn’t just a title but a badge of honor!

In the grand scheme, side-hustling tradwives embody a rising trend that seems here to stay, regardless of changing public policies. Perhaps with a sprinkle of support for part-time work and a dash of flexible policies for employers, we might just see these backgrounds become their own movement!

So, here’s to the side-hustle tradwives: ambitious, intelligent, and—surprise!—completely thrilled to multitask their way through life, armed with the newest money-saving hacks and a hefty dose of caffeine. Their lives may not be a Pinterest dream, but they are certainly making it interesting!
