Prepare Your Wallets: Tom Cruise’s New Flick is a Budget Behemoth

In what can only be described as a cinematic feat of financial gymnastics, Tom Cruise’s latest venture, Digger, is set to soar with a budget that comfortably nudges the nine-figure mark. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, in a world starving for originality, we’re looking at a minimum cost of US$125 million (or about S$160 million for those who enjoy currency conversions). Who knew saving humanity could be this pricey?

Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu—who has clearly upped the ante on creative spending—this black comedy revolves around a man so powerful that his disasters are measured in dollars. Matthew Belloni of Puck noted with a hint of skepticism, “A high-budget original Iñárritu comedy—Warners claims it cost US$125 million, but I can’t help but question their finance team.” Apparently, this film has it all: Tom Cruise in prosthetics, despite what your comfort level with mixing horror and comedy may be. Think of it as next year’s One Battle After Another but without all that pesky coherence.

Joining our illustrious star is an ensemble cast that might just make you wonder how much they cost to assemble. Think Riz Ahmed, Emma D’Arcy, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, and Sandra Hüller—all potentially plotting their escape from the budgetary madness surrounding them. Meanwhile, One Battle After Another, boasting a superstar cast including Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn, is rumored to have shelled out between US$130 million and US$175 million. Perhaps a ticket to the premiere will come with a complimentary financial advisor.

Iñárritu, returning to English-language filmmaking for the first time since 2015’s The Revenant, previously known as the “film that made Leonardo DiCaprio cry,” expressed his excitement about the strangely titled Digger, originally dubbed Judy. Snatch your popcorn, because he said, “I’m so excited. It’s a character-driven flick, and Tom is the perfect man for the job.” What a relief! I was genuinely concerned they’d cast someone who didn’t scream, “I can save humanity and also do my own stunts!”

He candidly described the film as a “wild comedy of catastrophic proportions”—presumably one that would make a disaster movie look like a documentary on knitting. “It’s insane! Tom makes me laugh daily. The range I discovered while working with him is unprecedented as a director.” Move over, Shakespeare; we’ve got comedic genius brewing here involving prosthetics and existential crises galore!

Continuing on, he elaborated, “It’s a brutal comedy—scary, funny, and let’s not forget beautiful!” Given the budget, it sounds like “brutal” might also hint at the reality of rebooting community funding options post-release. And just when you thought it couldn’t get more riveting, he added, “This is something that we’ve never done before, and it’s exciting.” Alright, let’s keep our fingers crossed that the excitement translates into something other than financial bankruptcy.

As the world collectively braces for this high-budget escapade, remember that every frame of Digger will carry the weight of its gargantuan budget. But hey, if it bombs, at least we’ll have more fuel for the ancient debate of whether spending a fortune to laugh at the horror of life is inherently worthwhile. So grab your wallets and prepare your excuses—the box office better be ready!
