YTV’S LATEST SCHEME: SIDE HUSTLE DEBUTS NOVEMBER 13

YTV Canada is set to unleash its latest goldmine of entertainment: *Side Hustle*. This live-action buddy comedy stars social media juggernauts and IRL besties, Annie LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels. Mark your calendars, folks, because it’s premiering on Friday, November 13, 2020, at 6:30 p.m. (ET/PT). What could possibly go wrong?
In a heroic tale of adolescent entrepreneurship, *Side Hustle* follows two brilliant minds, Lex (LeBlanc) and Presley (Bartels), who hatch a money-making scheme after almost burning down a boat belonging to their peculiar amigo, Munchy (Isaiah Crews). Truly, the audacity of youth! The show is brought to you by the creative genius of Dave Malkoff (because who doesn’t want a former *Henry Danger* writer at the helm?), filmed for your viewing pleasure in front of a live studio audience—also known as ‘victims of the laugh track’.
So, how do our pint-sized entrepreneurs tackle their newfound financial crisis? They muster up some creativity and, with the help of Fisher (the tech-savvy younger brother) and Jaget (the bossy older brother), they create an app for small jobs. Because who needs proper training when there’s an app for that?
As for the premiere episode, aptly titled “Start Hustling” (#101), things take a disastrous turn when our protagonists accidentally ignite a boat. With cash flowing out like the ocean, they become living mannequins at a fancy store, only to discover they’re modeling the latest in irritating wool. Hours of itching and posing ensue, leading them to hatch a spine-tingling plan to close the store early. Honestly, who knew mannequins could have anxiety? Hollywood, take note!
Let’s talk talent: LeBlanc has evolved from online fame on her family’s YouTube channel, “Bratayley,” into a pop sensation with more than 27 million followers. It’s about time someone monetized family drama, isn’t it? With six songs that somehow broke into the iTunes Top Ten, she recently snagged the honor of “Choice Music Web Star” at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards. Fantasy soccer teams, eat your heart out!
Bartels, on the other hand, is an all-rounder—a singer, dancer, and actress. Her first EP, “What Really Matters?”, dropped last year, just in time for aspiring teen sentiments. With almost 12 million followers across her social platforms and over 1.6 billion likes on TikTok, this girl could sell ice to an Eskimo while channeling the ghost of Shakespeare.
The duo even co-hosted Nickelodeon’s *Group Chat*, which soared to the top as the number-one unscripted live-action show for kids 6-11 in Q2 2020. If that’s not a resounding endorsement for the younger audience’s dire need for a *Side Hustle* fix, what is? Our young entrepreneurs are shaping the future, one poorly thought-out scheme at a time.
As executive producers and showrunners, John Beck & Ron Hart (you know, the brains behind *Knight Squad* and *Fuller House*) spell *unadulterated family fun*. Shauna Phelan, Nickelodeon’s Senior Vice President, takes the reins, proving that the strategy to mine social media for the newest icons isn’t just clever; it’s practically a public service for today’s youth.
