Honest Weight Food Co-op: A Community Commitment to Healthy Living
Honest Weight Food Co-op began with a straightforward concept: collaborate, purchase in bulk, and enhance food accessibility. Over the past fifty years, this initiative has evolved from a small basement buying club with just 20 friends in Albany to a sprawling 18,000-square-foot community-owned grocery store. The co-op now serves thousands of members and customers across the Capital Region, offering wholesome foods, specialty items, and health products.
Recognition in the Capital Region
This unwavering commitment to quality and community service has not gone unnoticed. In the 2026 Times Union Best of the Capital Region readers’ poll, Honest Weight was named the Best Health Food Store/Co-op. To learn more about how the co-op continues to thrive after half a century, we spoke with marketing manager Erika Lopez about its growth, evolution, and community support through healthy foods, events, and programs.
Strengthening Community Ties
Q: Honest Weight has now been part of the Capital Region for 50 years. What do you think has allowed the co-op to remain such an important part of the community for so long?
A: Honest Weight’s origins as a bulk buying club date back to January 1976. About 20 friends pooled their resources to enhance their purchasing power, dividing 50-pound bags of high-quality dried goods. Today, we maintain a large selection of bulk items while also expanding our inventory to include local, organic, vegan, and gluten-free products. Our dedication to offering a wide variety of foods—many locally sourced—strengthens our local economy. By keeping shoppers’ dollars within the Northeast, we benefit small farms and vendors and promote environmental sustainability. These core values underpin Honest Weight’s success through the last five decades and will guide us moving forward.
Celebrating Community Recognition
Q: Voters once again named Honest Weight Food Co-op the region’s best health food store or co-op. What does that recognition mean to you and your members?
A: Our members and staff are deeply grateful for this recognition. We strive to create a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Our product offerings reflect our shared values of healthy living and community service, so it’s truly rewarding to know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you to everyone who voted for us!
Member-Owned Advantages
Q: Co-ops operate differently than traditional grocery stores. How does the member-owned model shape the way Honest Weight does business?
A: Honest Weight is owned by our community, making our member-owners an integral part of achieving our triple-bottom line: people, planet, and profit. Our democratic decision-making empowers member-owners with a genuine voice in how we operate, what products are sold, and how we allocate our profits for community donations and outreach. By prioritizing the needs of those who shop, work, and invest their time here, we align our business decisions with a value proposition that extends beyond mere profitability.
Future Goals for the Co-op
Q: As Honest Weight looks ahead, what are your goals for the next chapter of the co-op?
A: Honest Weight is currently in an exciting growth phase. As we celebrate our 50th year, many reflect on our history and those who laid the groundwork for our success. We also look forward, envisioning ways to engage the next generation of co-op member-owners who will sustain us for another 50 years. While aiming for growth, we remain committed to providing affordable, high-quality natural foods and promoting equitable, participatory, and ecologically sustainable business practices through our democratic ownership and decision-making frameworks.
