In a universe obsessed with seriousness, where even the cat memes have their existential crises, it’s no wonder we turn to outrageously funny TV shows for a much-needed dose of laughter. These gems are unapologetically hilarious and utterly unforgettable—courageously trading convention for pure chaotic joy, unparalleled characters, razor-sharp wit, and moments that are the definition of “what-was-I-just-watching?”.
This weekend, if you’re looking to roll around in comedic delight on Amazon Prime Video, I present to you three recommendations that will leave your sides splitting—or at the very least, a gentle chuckle or two at your own expense. My personal favorite is a cult classic sitcom that flipped the American dream on its head…you know, just for kicks.
30 Rock
The snappiest sitcom in existence
A 16-time Emmy winner (because who really counts anymore?), 30 Rock stars Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, and Tracy Morgan. It’s hailed as one of television’s most consistently funny sitcoms, thanks to its relentless barrage of jokes—averaging over seven per minute! Yes, that’s right: seven opportunities for laughter per minute, even if some might be considered wildly inappropriate in today’s climate.
Our heroine, Liz Lemon (Fey), navigates the absurdity of working with an egotistical boss (Baldwin) and a wildly unpredictable star (Morgan). All while her personal life resembles a train wreck. Notably, it features a narrative that dives deep into the extremes of workplace antics, layered with puns, cultural references, and laugh-til-you-stumble moments that resemble a wild ride through a live-action cartoon.
Kevin
Broad City but with fewer human flaws (but more cat hair)
Let’s face it: adulthood doesn’t preclude us from loving cartoons. Enter Kevin, an adult-animated series newly available on Prime Video, created by the wonderfully quirky Aubrey Plaza and Joe Wengert. Kevin is the cat who’s just had enough of his humans’ drama. Literally. As in, he’s looking to disengage from the emotional rollercoaster that is his owners’ breakup.
Voiced by Jason Schwartzman, Kevin’s escapades take him from the comfort of home to a pet shelter in Queens. He decides it’s time for a feline rebellion—complete with chaotic friends who are just as bizarre as the situation calls for. This eight-episode journey is a wild ride, packed with pop culture quips, urban misadventures, and pun-filled references. Oh, and did I mention Whoopi Goldberg lends her voice? Because it’s all happening, folks.
Married… with Children
The finest anti-sitcom this side of the 1980s
If you’ve skipped out on a single episode of Married… with Children, it’s time for a wake-up call. This 11-season show was a game-changer for its cast, featuring breakout roles from Ed O’Neill and Katey Sagal, just to name a couple of legends.
The Bundys, a suburban Chicago family, epitomize everything an American family shouldn’t be. From Al’s (O’Neill) misogynistic shoe salesmanship to Peggy’s unearned high fashion, this family makes for some delightful poetry in dysfunction. Their sad-sack existence directly counters the sugar-coated family sitcoms of the late 20th century, serving as a delightful satire of “the perfect family.”
A beautiful escape from rationality
Outrageous comedies like these thrive on their audacity to be ridiculous. With rapid-fire one-liners, mockumentary styles, and plots that could only be fully appreciated with a side of popcorn, these shows let viewers escape reality entirely. They’re here to remind you that beneath the chaos, there’s laughter—usually stemming from the sheer absurdity of what’s unfolding on-screen.
